Kaffe Fassett Designer Showcase:

Kaffe Fassett (born 1937 in San Francisco, California) is an American artist who is best known for his colourful designs in the decorative arts -- knitting, needlepoint, patchwork, painting and ceramics. ".. colour is his very medium, whatever the substance he uses." He has resided in England since 1964.

Fassett received a scholarship to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston at the age of 19, but shortly left school to paint in London and moved there in 1964.

Fassett's work has attracted a considerable following. His work was the subject of a 1988 one-man show at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the first time a living textile artist had such a show there. The show proved so popular that it was successfully converted into an international travelling show that visited nine countries.

A prolific author of over a dozen books, Fassett concentrates on teaching the color and design stages of craftwork rather than the construction stage. In addition to his books, he has hosted craft-related television and radio programs for the BBC, including his own show, Glorious Color.

Thanks so much for visiting our site. I've been collecting and knitting with Rowan yarns for over 20 years now.

I've been dreaming of opening an online Rowan business for years to help knitters looking for the exact colors they require from older patterns. With my business partner, Patrick, that dream is becoming a reality. Slowly but surely we're building out our site, www.RareRowanYarns.com. We have hundreds of kits to list eventually and can safely state that we can recreate more than 90% of Kaffe's older designs from the "collection." If there is anything in particular you would like to see, just drop us a line and let us know.

It's always a pleasure to meet a fellow knitter, particularly one that values the genius of these amazing, timeless designs. We are creating this site for knitters who are passionate about multi-color hand created designs and your feedback is important. If there is anything we can do to help you in your letting, feel free to contact us.

Lacy Kit in Rowan 4-ply Cotton by Kaffe Fassett

Kaffe Fassett creates a sophisticated and classic colorway for this lovely summer cardigan. Knit in Rowan 4-ply Cotton, this design features simple shaping and set-in long sleeves. Although rated for experienced knitters, the design calls for two colors per row and will be a relatively straightforward project for knitters who don't mind working from a chart. The finished cardigan can be made in any of five sizes -- XSmall (bust 32), Small (bust 34), Medium (bust 36), Large (bust 38), and XLarge (bust 40). The patterns calls for a tension of 30 stitches and 32 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) on US 3 (3mm) needles. The pattern is found in Rowan's Knitting Magazine number 33, published in Spring of 2003.

Technique: Faire Isle
Difficulty: Expert

Rarity: A few of the shades are discontinued, and it can be quite difficult to find all of them in any particular shop, so the kit is becoming increasingly difficult to assemble.

In addition to the yarn, you will require 6 buttons to complete the design. The pattern suggests Rowan buttons 75320, which are simple two hole mother of pearl/shell 3/8" buttons. The buttons are not included, but you should be able to find suitable buttons at your local fabric/sewing store.

* Some of these shades have been discontinued, so the kit is becoming increasingly difficult to assemble. Where multiple hanks are required, we have selected matching dye lots.

Origami Rowan Yorkshire Tweed 4-ply by Kaffe Fassett

Kaffe's colors positively smoulder in this brilliant geometric intarsia from Rowan's Vintage Style, published in 2004. Knit in Rowan's sadly discontinued Yorkshire Tweed 4-ply, this pullover features simple shaping with a modified drop shoulder sleeve. Pictured on a man, the design would also be suitable for a woman. The finished sweater can be made in any of five sizes -- Small (bust/chest 38), Medium (bust/chest 40), Large (bust/chest 42), XLarge (bust/chest 44), and XXLarge (bust/chest 46). Our kit contains all the Yorkshire Tweed 4 ply you require to complete the jumper in any of the sizes, using Kaffe's original colors. Rowan's Yorkshire Tweed 4-ply was a beautifully heathered soft 100% wool tweed and is sadly almost impossible to find in any quantity these days. The patterns calls for a tension of 26 stitches and 38 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) on US 3 (3.25mm) needles.

Kaffe Fassett Midnight Carnation in Vintage Rowan Yarns

Another Vintage kit from the earliest days of Kaffe's collaboration with Rowan yarns, "Midnight Carnation" was first shown in Rowan Knitting Book 2, but the pattern wasn't published. It was only available in kit form. To my knowledge Rowan only did this twice with Kaffe designs, Midnight Carnation and the tumbling blocks bedspread from Kaffe's Color Book. We have recreated the kit from our stash of rare rowan yarns allowing you to create this more colorful version of the "Big Flower Jacket." The colorway is a wonderful combination of bright tweedy reds and pinks with a pale blue green center on a rich base of dark blue, black, green, and brown stripes. After the popularity of the sage green version of this design, Kaffe wanted to create one that truly smouldered. Midnight Carnation is one of Kaffe's easiest designs to knit since most of the garment is simple stripes and the flower uses two colors in a row with the exception of the center where you have three. Done in plain knitting and motif intarsia, it is suitable for intermediate knitters. Knit on large needles with fine yarns used in combination, the jacket will work up quickly. The cardigan features simple shaping with a drop sleeve, pockets, ribbed cuffs, button band, and welt. The design comes in one size to fit bust/chest from 36 to 44 inches with a finished measurement of 51 inches. We include a copy of the pattern and the shade card so you can identify the yarns. The cardigan is knit from three vintage rowan yarns - Kaffe Fassett Light Tweed, Rowanspun Tweed, and Lightweight DK. Each of these yarns is 100% wool. The Rowanspun Tweed came in 100 gram hanks and both the Light Tweed and LDK came in 25 gram hanks. All of these yarns are long discontinued, and finding them to create this kit can be very difficult. The pattern calls for a tension of 14 stitches and 19 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) on US 10.5 (6.5 mm) needles.

Technique: Plain knitting and Motif Intarsia
Difficulty: Easy/Intermediate

Rarity: Each of these yarns has been discontinued, some for decades. The kit represents a rare opportunity for you to knit one of Kaffe's most classic designs in the original colors he specified.

Kit Contents:

In total the kit contains the following shades. We have matched the exact quantities kitted by Rowan to ensure you will have ample yarn to finish the design. Quantities vary from 10g to 300g. In total the kit contains over 3 pounds of wool:

Cherrymix Light Tweed (216)
Midnight Light Tweed (224)
Jungle Light Tweed (212)
Black Light Tweed (211)
Forest Light Tweed (219)
Earth Light Tweed (206)
Pacific Light Tweed (221)
Lakeland Light Tweed (222)
Jade Light Tweed (220)
Champagne Light Tweed (202)
Scoured Light Tweed (201)

One a.m. Rowanspun (756)

We have generally selected matching dye lots, though not always given the difficulty in finding some of these yarns. As they are used in combination, a difference in lots will not affect the look of the finished garment. You will also require 8 buttons which are n

Kaffe Fassett Flower Jacket in Rowanspun 4 ply Vogue

From the Winter 2001/2002 edition of Vogue knitting we are happy to offer this wonderful Kaffe Fassett cardigan. A rich floral brocade in deep autumn jewel tones, this cropped jacket features corrogated rib edgings, a shaped fit, and yarn covered buttons. Kaffe's combines wine, blue, green, rust, brown and warm grey to create a deep smouldering effect in color. Kaffe Knits Again: Special Offer!

This offer comes with a choice. The original pattern published in Rowan Knitting & Crochet number 37 in the summer of 2005 uses an earthy neutral, shade 514 "Reed" as the background.

As a request from knitters who wanted a brighter version Kaffe swapped the background when he republished the pattern in 2007's Kaffe Knits Again, for a brilliant shade of peacock blue - 512 "Exotic."

Please specify which background color you prefer when ordering.

(514) Reed or                      (512) Exotic

In addition to the yarn, we have included 2.25 yards of Kaffe's wonderful Broad Stripe fabric in colorway 8 for the backing. This unique fabric was handwoven in India by local craftsmen on simple looms and makes the perfect finish to your knitting. BS-8 was discontinued years ago and is amost impossible to find today, giving you a unique opportunity to create a garment that fully captures Kaffe's genius for color.

Kaffe Fassett Persian Red Little Circles Jacket

This is one for the Rowan historian. The kit dates from 1983, two years before Kaffe Fassett's landmark book, Glorious Knits, was published. Working with Stephen Sheard of Rowan, the transplanted American was designing yarns and sumptuous knitting kits that would soon usher in a new era in hand knitting. To my knowledge, the pattern for this jacket version of the "Little Circles" was never published independently. The colorway we offer here, Persian Red, is a classic combination of red, scarlet, pinks, lavenders, and russet, with deeper shades of cherry and aubergine. The jacket is knit cuff to cuff in one piece and features simple shaping, pockets, and a stand-up ribbed collar. Knit in faire isle technique with chunky weight yarns, the design is one of the easiest of Kaffe's creations. It is suitable for any knitter comfortable with carrying three colors in a row. The one sized cardigan has a finished bust/chest measurement of 46 inches and the sleeves are "on the longish side," making it suitable for a man or a woman. Kaffe describes how to shorten the sleeves if desired. The colors are vibrant and show Kaffe's color genius from the very beginning. Little Circles Jacket is knit from Original Rowan Chunky Tweed, Chunky Cotton Chenille, Kaffe Fassett Light Tweed, and a precurser to Rowan's DK and Lightweight DK wools - two colors of custom dyed "Persian" tapestry yarn -- all 100% virgin wool with the exception of the Chenille which at the time was made of 100% cotton. This is an original Rowan kit and includes 7 buttons, the pattern, a shade card, and a Kaffe Fassett label. The original box is long gone. The pattern calls for a tension of 18 stitches and 16 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) on US 10.5 (6.5 mm) needles. You will also require US size 7 (4.5 mm) and US size 9 (5.5 mm) needles to complete the pocket linings and ribbings. The color sequence to complete the collar is also missing from the pattern, but at a workshop many years ago, Kaffe told me to just repeat the cuff and ribbing colors which is what the picture shows.

Technique: Three Color Faire Isle
Difficulty: Intermediate

Rarity: As these shades were developed over two decades ago, they are very scarce. Collecting the persian is all but impossible since it was only produced for the kits. Don't miss this opportunity to recreate one of Kaffe's earliest designs in the glory of his original colors.

Kit Contents:

In total the kit contains the following shades. We have given quantities as number of balls - each roughly 50 grams:

8 Crimson Pink Chunky Tweed (701)
3 Cherrymix Light Tweed (216)
2 Pillar Box Persian (45)
3 Aubergine Chunky Chenille (356)
2 Indian Red Chunky Tweed (711)
2 Lavender Chunky Chenille (357)
2 Blossom Light Tweed (214)
3 Scarlet Persian (44)
2 Rosemix Light Tweed (215)

Since this was kitted by Rowan, dye lots match. The yarns are not labeled but there is a shade card so you can identify which is which.

As with all of our RareRowan kits, this pack has been carefully stored in a non-smoking home, and these vintage yarns and fabric will arrive to you in pristine condition. We stock our kits in two locations and ship daily from Austin, but only on weekends from Katy. Kaffe Fassett Chrysanthemum Jacket in Kid Silk, DDK

The only way to describe "Chrysanthemum" is stunning. Rowan introduced their new line of Kaffe's Kid/Silk in 1989 with a wonderful pamphlet "Designs in Kaffe's Kid/Silk." One of two Fassett Designs in the book, Chrysanthemum proved to be so popular they kitted it for several years. A rich brocade of deep jewel tones, this design is recognized as one of Kaffe's enduring masterpieces. The original was featured in his one man show at the Victoria and Albert Museum nearly a decade later. The cardigan features simple shaping, dropped shoulder sleeves, a zipped front, and in rare exception to Kaffe's "stockinette" rule, a patterned cuff and shawl collar. Knit in a combination of faire isle and intarsia technique, the design is rated for expert knitters. Worked from a 54 stich chart, it will be well worth the effort you put into it. The one sized cardigan has a finished bust/chest measurement of 53 inches. Kaffe's color choices are strong, brilliant, and timeless. Chrysanthemum is knit from Designer DK, Lambswool Tweed, and Kaffe's own Kid Silk. Designer DK (50 grams) and Lambswool Tweed (50 grams) are both DK weight 100% wool yarns. Kid Silk (25 grams) is a blend of 70% Kid Mohair and 30% Mulberry Silk. The Mulberry Silk is hidden in the base of the yarn and shines through the Kid Mohair to give each rich shade a gleaming quality. Our kit contains all the yarns and shades in Kaffe's original design. The pattern calls for a tension of 24 stitches and 25 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) on US 7 (4.5mm) needles.

Technique: Faire Isle and Intarsia
Difficulty: Expert

Rarity: As these shades were developed nearly two decades ago, they are scarce. Collecting all the required colors could be very time consuming not to say expensive. These Kid Silk shades currently sell on ebay for $20 a ball. Don't miss this super rare opportunity to create Kaffe's classic design in the original colors.

Kit Contents:

In total the kit contains the following shades and quantities:

7 Russett DDK (663)
7 Pillar Box Kid Silk (985)
2 Potpourri Kid Silk (996)
3 Violet Haze Kid Silk (982)
1 Tan DDK (662)
1 Pink DDK (667)
3 Holly Kid Silk (990)
3 Old Gold Kid Silk (989)
3 Apple Green DDK (660)
1 Pale Blue DDK (63)
3 Steel Blue Kid Silk (991)
3 Heliotrope Lambswool Tweed (186)
3 Green DDK (661)
1 Garnet Kid Silk (992)

Normally we select the same dye lot when multiple balls are required. Given the difficulty of collecting this kit, some of the DDK shades are from different lots. According to Kaffe, this "will only add to the richness of your finished garment.

As with all of our RareRowan kits, this pack has been carefully stored in a non-smoking home, and these vintage yarns and fabric will arrive to you in pristine condition. We stock our kits in two locations and ship daily from Austin, but only on weekends from Katy. Kaffe Fassett Ping Pong Sweater Rowan Handknit DK Cotton

One of Kaffe's brilliantly fun designs, "Ping Pong," is a wonderful summer romp of deep pastel circles accented with bright centers on a sea green background. The design appeared in Rowan Knitting Magazine 23 in the Spring of 1998. Here we offer the more colorful man's version. Ping Pong is knit in the intarsia technique out of Rowan's DK Cotton. Rated for intermediate knitters, the pattern is appropriate for anyone comfortable with the intarsia technique. Featuring simple oversized shaping, striped rib bands, and a crew neck, this design still looks fresh and contemporary today with it's multi colored "targets" and rich background. The pattern comes in three sizes - Medium with a finished chest/bust of 50 inches, Large with a finished chest/bust of 52 inches, and XLarge with a finished chest/bust of 54 inches. By knitting the woman's size from the chart you could easily create a smaller version. Although this colorway is shown on a man, we think it would be equally suited for a woman. Knit entirely from Rowan Handknit DK Cotton, a soft 100% cotton yarn that comes in 50 gram skeins. Our kit contains all the yarn you require to make the largest size in Kaffe's original colors. The pattern calls for a tension of 20 stitches and 28 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) on US 3 (3.5mm) needles.

Technique: Intarsia
Difficulty: Intermediate

Rarity: Many of the colors in this kit have been discontinued for quite some time, making it difficult to assemble all the colors you need. It took us three years to find the last shades we needed - and they came from Germany. Don't miss this opportunity to create one of Kaffe's exciting designs in the original colors.

Kit Contents:

In total the kit contains the following shades and quantities:

11 Sea Green (237)
3 Tope (253)
3 Popcorn (229)
2 Damson (226)
3 Gooseberry (219)
3 Sunkissed (231)
2 Almond (212)
1 Cerise (233)
1 Fuchsia (214)
1 Rosso (215)

For the most part, we have selected matching dye lots. You should know that one of the background balls is a different lot. If you use it to knit the cuffs it won't be noticable in the finished garment.

As with all of our RareRowan kits, this pack has been carefully stored in a non-smoking home, and these vintage yarns and fabric will arrive to you in pristine condition. Moody Blues in Vintage Rowan Cottons by Kaffe Fassett

Again, a masterpiece of Rowan's color genius Kaffe Fassett. In "Moody Blues" he combines every shade of red imaginable with cooler purples, blues, and greens to create a wonderful summer cardigan suitable for either a man or a woman. Moody Blues was published in Rowan Book 13 in the Spring of 1993. The design is rated for expert knitters and is suitable for anyone who enjoys working intarsia from a chart. It could be done on a knitting machine with an intarsia carriage given the straightforward geometric pattern. The cardigan is sized for a loose, relaxed fit and features drop shoulder sleeves, a wonderful multi-color rib, and a shawl collar. Kaffe's colors are bold, but they rarely date. The geometric interplay of blues and reds looks as modern today as it did 15 years ago. There are a total of 28 shades of cotton in this knit including long discontinued shades of Rowan Sea Breeze Cotton, Cable Mercerized Cotton, Nice Cotton, and Cotton Glace. The yarns which come in 50 gram balls are all soft, 100% cotton yarns that are light weight and create a soft drapable fabric with a subtle sheen. The finished cardigan can be made in any of three sizes -- Small (finished bust/chest 44.5 inches), Medium (finished bust/chest 47 inches), and Large (finished bust/chest 49 inches). Our kit contains all the yarns you need to complete the cardigan in any of the sizes, using Kaffe's original colors. The patterns calls for a tension of 26 stitches and 32 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) on US 3 (3mm) needles.

Technique: Intarsia
Difficulty: Expert

Rarity: It was quite a challenge to pull all these colors together. It took us three years. This is a rare opportunity for you to create this Fassett classic in the colors he specified. Even though this kit was truly a labor of love to collect, our pricing reflects the cost to replicate the yarn at today's prices for Cotton Glace, but you would never be able to find sufficient color range in the current line.

Kit Contents:

In total the kit contains 36 balls of Rowan Cotton in the following shades and quantities:

1 Sea Breeze Leaf (569)
1 Glace Black (727)
2 Nice Samba (435)
1 Nice Rio (431)
4 Nice Blood Orange (445)
1 Glace Rowan (736)
2 CMC Geranium (338)
1 CMC Deep Blue (309)
2 Glace Fiesta (437)
1 Sea Breeze Forget me not (557)
1 Glace Granite (734)
1 Nice Mardi Gras (436)
1 Nice Kiwi (443)
1 Sea Breeze Madiera (565)
1 Glace Spice (737)
1 CMC Cerise (326)
1 Nice Parade (430)
1 Nice Bubble Gum (441)
2 Nice Airforce (442)
1 Nice Swimming Pool (438)
2 Nice Carnival (432)
1 Sea Breeze Sand (568)
1 Nice Adobe (434)
1 Nice Dusk (439)
1 Sea Breeze Pine Forest (567)
1 Nice Parakeet (433)
1 Glace Provence (744)
1 Nice Lilac Wine (440)

We have made one substitution to complete this pack - the original design called for 2 Nice in Fiesta and we have replaced them with the same color in Glace. For the most part, multiple balls have matching dye lots, though in this pattern it would not make a difference.

In addition to the yarn, you will need 7 buttons which are not included. The pattern calls for Rowan 227 buttons, long gone from retail stores. Substitute a 3/8 to 1/2 inch pearl/shell button with two holes and you'll duplicate the original look.

As with all of our RareRowan kits, this pack has been carefully stored in a non-smoking home, and these vintage yarns and fabric will arrive to you in pristine condition. We stock our kits in two locations and ship daily from Austin, but only on weekends from Katy. If you need a fast turnaround on shipping, please inquire before purchase so we can make a firm committment on a ship date.

Kaffe Fassett Original Crosspatch Vest in Light Tweed

"Crosspatch" was first published in Kaffe's landmark book, Glorious Knits, in 1985. Although it has been recreated several times since, including in his newest book, Kaffe Knits Again, we feel there is an unmistakable charm to the original version done in Kaffe's own light tweed. In describing the design Kaffe mused that "every nation on earth has its version of plaid. . . . this is my homage to that timeless pattern. It has the simplicity of overall solid shapes, but they are broken by fine slivers of color -- simple and complex at the same time." Although the vertical lines can seem intimidating to knit, the design can easily be simplified by swiss darning them in afterwards as Kaffe suggests. This sleeveless pullover features simple shaping, a v-neck and striped ribbed borders. It is suitable for intermediate to experienced knitters. The vest comes in one size to fit up to 38" chest/bust. The design would be easy to enlarge. We have plenty of light tweed available if you would like to tackle a bigger size. Light Tweed was designed by Kaffe for Rowan of 100% wool and came in 25 gram hanks. The light tweed has been long discontinued and finding them to create this kit can be very difficult. The pattern calls for a tension of 24 stitches and 36 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) on US 3 (3.25 mm) needles.

Technique: Intarsia
Difficulty: Intermediate/Experienced

Rarity: Kaffe Fassett Light Tweed has been discontinued for some time. The kit represents a rare opportunity for you to knit one of Kaffe's most classic designs in the original colors he specified.

Kaffe Fassett Jack's Back Peplum Jacket Vintage Rowan

"Jack's Back Stripe" peplum jacket was first published in Kaffe's landmark book, Glorious Knits, in 1985. Here we offer an original Rowan kit for the design complete with pattern, shade card, buttons, a Kaffe Fassett label, and all the wonderful and hard to find vintage Rowan yarns you require to complete the design. The box is long gone. Kaffe himself described the colorway as "brown marble streaked with rich veins of maroon and moss greens on deep beige and grey grounds. . . . I was thinking of certain tweedy ladies who look wonderful in grey pearls and smoky grey-browns." Jack's back is one of Kaffe's most enduring and relatively simple designs to knit in faire isle technique from a simple chart. The cardigan features fitted shaping, set in sleeves, and a very feminine peplum border. It is suitable for intermediate knitters. The jacket can be completed in two sizes - small/medium to fit a 32-34 inch bust and medium/large to fit a 34 - 36 inch bust. Jack's Back Peplum is knit from three vintage rowan yarns - Kaffe Fassett Light Tweed, Lightweight DK, and Fine Cotton Chenille. Both the Light Tweed and LDK were 100% wool and came in 25 gram hanks. The Fine Cotton Chenille was originally a 100% cotton yarn and came in 50 gram balls. All of these yarns are long discontinued, and finding them to create this kit can be very difficult. The pattern calls for a tension of 22 stitches and 26 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) on US 6 (4 mm) needles.

Technique: Faire Isle
Difficulty: Intermediate

Rarity: Each of these yarns has been discontinued for some time. The kit represents a rare opportunity for you to knit one of Kaffe's most classic designs in the original colors he specified.

Kaffe Fassett Chinese Rose Jacket in Rowan DDK DK Fleck

This is another design that is quite difficult to find unless you happen upon an assembled kit. The "Chinese Rose" jacket was first published in Kaffe's second book, Glorious Color, in 1988. Here we offer an original Rowan pattern with all the wonderful and hard to find Rowan DK Fleck and Designer DK yarns you need. The colorway is simple for Kaffe but nonetheless stunning -- shaded Lavender and pink flowers with blue, green, and grey stems on a flecked black background. Chinese Rose has been one of Kaffe's most popular designs and is still stunning today. This cardigan is knit in a combination of faire isle and intarsia technique from a large chart. It is suitable for experienced knitters. The jacket is comes in one size with a finished width at the bust of 48 inches. A very feminine design and shape, nonetheless I've often thought it would be possible to alter the shaping and make a wonderful pullover for a man. The colors are tweedy strong pastels and blend beautifully against the flecked black background. Chinese Rose is knit from two classic Rowan wool yarns -- Rowan DK Fleck and Designer DK both in 50 gram balls. All of these yarns are long discontinued, and finding sufficient amounts of the black in the same dye lot can be very difficult. The pattern calls for a tension of 24 stitches and 27 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) on US 6 (4 mm) needles.

Technique: Combination Faire Isle and Intarsia
Difficulty: Experienced

Rarity: DDK and DK Fleck have long been discontinued. This is a rare opportunity for you to knit one of Kaffe's most exotic designs in the original colors he specified.

Kit Contents:

In total the kit contains the following shades and quantities:

11 Black DK Fleck (62)
1 Green DDK (89)

1 Purple DDK (127)
1 Lilac DDK (121)
1 Rust DK Fleck (77)
1 Dark Pink DDK (93)
1 Pink DK Fleck (410)

Kaffe Fassett Outline Star Coat Vintage Rowan Yarns

Another Vintage kit from the earliest days of Kaffe's collaboration with Rowan yarns, "Outlined Star Coat" was first published in the landmark book, Glorious Knits, in 1985. The pattern was given in the book, but Kaffe didn't mention the specific yarns he used. There was such an outcry from knitters who wanted to recreate these designs that Rowan published a pamphlet for shop owners in the UK describing either the exact yarns used or very close equivalents in the case when the garments were not knit entirely from Rowan yarns. Using our copy of the "key" we've assembled all the original Rowan yarns you need to recreate this coat exactly as it was knit. The colorway is a wonderful combination of bright tweedy shades on a rich base of dark stripes. Kaffe said it reminded him of early American patchwork quilts, but his inspiration was actuallly Caucasian carpets with their rich muted tone. The coat has a sophisticated folk look that was shamelessly copied by ready to wear houses and other yarn companies after the design was first published. Outline star is one of Kaffe's easiest designs to knit since it is done in chunky yarns in the faire isle technique. Although it is a large garment, the chunky yarns mean it will make up quickly. The coat is knit all in one piece from hem to hem and features simple shaping, integrated sleeves, pockets, and narrow ribbed edgings. It is suitable for intermediate knitters or anyone comfortable with three color in a row faire isle. To simplify the knitting you could always duplicate stitch the star outline colors and only carry two colors in a row. The design comes in one size to fit bust/chest from 36 to 44 inches with a finished measurement of 51 inches. The coat has been modeled on both men and women and is suitable for both. Although the pattern doesn't tell you which colors to use in each row, it is easy enough to approximate studying the photograph from the book. We'd be happy to give you our approximation of the row by row color changes. The coat is knit from three vintage rowan yarns - Chunky Cotton Chenille, Chunky Tweed, and Lightweight DK. The Chunky Tweed and LDK were 100% wool and came in 100 gram hanks and 25 gram hanks respectively. The Chunky Chenilles were at that time 100% cotton and came in 100 gram hanks. All of these yarns are long discontinued, and finding them to create this kit can be very difficult. The pattern calls for a tension of 15 stitches and 16 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) on US 10.5 (6.5 mm) needles.

Technique: Three color in a row Faire Isle
Difficulty: Easy/Intermediate

Rarity: Each of these yarns has been discontinued, some for decades. The kit represents a rare opportunity for you to knit one of Kaffe's most classic designs in the original colors he specified.

Kit Contents:

Summer Star Pullower in Rowan Glace by Kaffe Fassett

Kaffe's "Summer Star" combines soft buttery neutrals with deep pastels to create the look of summer on a carefree island. The pullover is modeled on a woman but would look equally good on a man. Summer Star was published in Rowan Knitting Magazine 25 in the Spring of 1999. The design is rated for expert knitters and is suitable for anyone who enjoys working intarsia from a chart. The sweater is sized for a loose, relaxed fit and features drop shoulder sleeves, a wonderful multi-color rib, and a classic crew neck collar. Kaffe's color choices are timeless. There are a total of 13 shades of Rowan Cotton Glace, a long standing staple of their summer line. Glace is a very soft, mercerized 100% cotton yarn that is light weight and creates a soft drapable fabric with a subtle sheen. It comes in 50 gram balls. The finished cardigan can be made in any of three sizes -- Small (finished bust/chest 46 inches), Medium (finished bust/chest 48 inches), and Large (finished bust/chest 50 inches). If you want a closer fit, it would be simple to narrow the width given the regular, geometric design. Our kit contains all the yarns you need to complete the cardigan in any of the sizes, using Kaffe's original colors. The patterns calls for a tension of 23 stitches and 32 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) on US 3 (3.25mm) needles.

Technique: Intarsia
Difficulty: Expert

Rarity: Although Glace is a current Rowan offering, most of these shades have been discontinued and can be quite difficult to find in local yarn shops or even on ebay. Don't miss the opportunity to create this Kaffe Fassett classic in the colors he specified.

Kaffe Fassett Big Flower Jacket Vintage Rowan Yarns

Another Vintage kit from the earliest days of Kaffe's collaboration with Rowan yarns, "Big Flower Jacket" was first published in the landmark book, Glorious Knits, in 1985. Here we offer an original Rowan kit for the design complete with a copy of the pattern, shade card, buttons, a Kaffe Fassett label, and all the wonderful and hard to find vintage Rowan yarns you require to complete the design. This kit came to us incomplete so we added the missing yarns from our extensive stash to match the pattern requirements in the book.. The colorway is very sophisticated with a large grey green flower with a bright blue center on stripes of tweedy browns accented with iris, lavender, periwinkle, and french mustard. A wonderful combination that has aged beautifully. Still smoky, elegant, and fresh. Big Fower is one of Kaffe's easiest designs to knit since, apart from the flower centers, there are only two colors to a row in the garment. Most of the background is simple stripes in aran and chunky weight yarns so it will work up quickly. The cardigan features simple shaping, drop shoulder sleeves, pockets, and ribbed edgings. It is suitable for beginning to intermediate knitters. The design comes in one size to fit bust/chest from 36 to 44 inches with a finished measurement of 50.5 inches. Big Flower Jacket is knit from six vintage rowan yarns - Chunky Cotton Chenille, Rowanspun Tweed, Chunky Tweed, Kaffe Fassett Light Tweed, Lightweight DK, and Fine Cotton Chenille. The Rowanspun Tweed, Chunky Tweed, Light Tweed and LDK were 100% wool and came in 100 gram hanks for the Rowanspun and Chunky and 25 gram hanks for the Light Tweed and LDK. Both the chenilles were 100% cotton with the Chunky Chenille coming in 100 gram hanks and the Fine Cotton Chenille in 50 gram balls. All of these yarns are long discontinued, and finding them to create this kit can be very difficult. Kaffe amazing sense of color shines in this bright summer top that captures the rich shades of the near middle east. Kaffe Fassett Lattice - Rowan Glace, Nice, Wool Cotton

Again, a masterpiece of Rowan's color genius Kaffe Fassett. In "Lattice" he combines blues, reds, rusts, and greens against an olive lattice. The small diamonds pop beautifully against the striped patches and the overall diagonal grid -- a design with lots of movement. This wonderful summer pullover is suitable for either a man or a woman. Lattice was published in Rowan Book 11 in the Spring of 1991. The design is rated for experienced knitters and is suitable for anyone who enjoys working intarsia from a chart. It could be done on a knitting machine with an intarsia carriage. The cardigan is sized for a loose, relaxed fit and features drop shoulder sleeves, a wonderful multi-color rib, and a crew neck. Kaffe's colors are subtle and still fresh today.

There are a total of 19 shades of vintage rowan yarns in the kit. It features long discontinued shades of Rowan Cotton Glace, Wool and Cotton, and Nice Cotton. Glace and Nice are 100% cotton yarns. Wool/cotton was a blend of 50% fine botany wool and 50% long staple Egyptian cotton. The yarns, which came in 50 gram balls or skeins, are all beautifully soft and create a light weight drapable fabric with a subtle sheen. The finished pullover comes in one size with a finished chest measurement of 46.5 inches. The geometric pattern could easily be scaled up or down if you wanted to make a different size. Our kit contains all the yarns you need to complete the pullover in Kaffe's original colors. We have made one substitution, providing 2 balls of Glace in shade 437 Fiesta, instead of the called for Nice Cotton. The shade is exactly the same, but the sheen is a little softer. Since Kaffe used both yarns in the garment, it will make no difference to the look of the finished product. The patterns calls for a tension of 25 stitches and 34 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) on US 3 (3mm) needles.

Technique: Intarsia
Difficulty: Experienced

Rarity: It was quite a challenge to pull all these colors together. It took us many years. This is a rare opportunity for you to create this Fassett classic in the colors he specified.

Kit Contents:

In total the kit contains 29 balls of vintage Rowan yarns in the following shades and quantities:

1 Provence Glace (744)
1 Gentian Glace (743)
1 Dijon Glace (739)
2 Granite Glace (734)
1 Black Glace (727)
1 Matador Glace (742)
2 Rowan Glace (736) different lots

Kaffe Fassett Chinese Rose Jacket in Rowan DDK DK Fleck

Another Vintage kit from the earliest days of Kaffe's collaboration with Rowan yarns, the "Pastel Star Coat" was first pictured in the landmark book, Glorious Knits, in 1985. The general pattern was given in the book, but Kaffe didn't mention the specific yarns he used. There was such an outcry from knitters who wanted to recreate these designs that Rowan published a pamphlet for shop owners in the UK describing either the exact yarns used or very close equivalents in the case when the garments were not knit entirely from Rowan yarns. Using our copy of the "key" we've assembled all the original Rowan yarns you need to recreate this coat. The kit is a truly amazing combination of deep pastels and warm tweeds -- a once in a lifetime tour de force of classic rowan yarns. The colors were inspired by an old chenille curtain Kaffe found in a flea market. It inludes mossy greens, pinks and butter yellow with dusty sky blue and beige to make a beautifully faded warm color scheme. The outline star design has a sophisticated folk look that was shamelessly copied by ready to wear houses and other yarn companies after the book was published.

Although the pattern doesn't tell you which colors to use in each row, it is simple enough to use the photograph as a guide for your own flights of fancy. You will use the chunky yarns single and combine the light tweeds to create marls of color. The coat is knit from three vintage rowan yarns - Chunky Cotton Chenille, Chunky Tweed, and Light Tweed. The Chunky Tweed and Light Tweed were 100% wool and came in 100 gram hanks and 25 gram hanks respectively.

The kit represents a rare opportunity for you to knit one of Kaffe's most classic designs in the original colors.

In most cases, where multiple hanks are required we have selected matching dye lots, but given the rarity of these yarns, it was not always possible. In this design, it won't matter.

Your total satisfaction is important to us. If your are displeased in any way, please let us know so we can correct the situation.
